Seasonal Spill Response Challenges
CSRO Member companies are constantly aware of the changes in spill response challenges brought about by Mother Nature. This item comes from a CSRO Member very involved in Arctic spill response training and related operational activities.
The two photographs, taken 6 months apart, from almost the exact same location looking in different directions.
Photo #1. March, 2009 East Channel, Mackenzie River just north of the town of Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada. (Almost 70° north latitude) Looking north. The ice road built annually on the river ice carries road vehicle traffic with gross weights of up to 40,000 kgs. to communities and locations otherwise only reachable by air in winter. Air temperature – 57° C
Photo #2. September 2009. Same location, looking south. Containment boom and spill response skimmer deployed at spill response training exercise in + 18° C weather.
